A spontaneous decision to join my mates for a night at the pub meant that I found myself at the Sail and Anchor in Fremantle. The pub sits opposite the Fremantle Markets, so I have walked past it for years without noticing (except when the smell of old beer wafts out onto the street). I forgot to take a photo of the outside when we arrived in the evening, but I snapped a photo while passing by a few days later!

The holidays demand many catch-ups with friends, so I was a little strapped for cash and chose a more budget meal.

Crumbed Deep Fried Brie ($12.90)
The crumbed deep fried brie immediately caught my eye. This was my first experience of fried cheese! I enjoyed the soft, melty cheese and the crunchy outside. The onion jam was quite sweet and was a great accompaniment - I wish there had been more of it. After my dish arrived, a couple of others drooled over it and then ordered one to share on the side of their mains. My only complaint was that the inside of the cheese wedges was not completely melted.

Grazier’s Rump Steak ($18.90)
I had a bite of my friend’s rump steak, which was properly cooked to medium rare (as requested). It was quite tender considering the cheaper cut of meat, but anything would have impressed me compared to the rump steak I tried at Outback Jacks. The chips were crunchy and a lovely golden brown colour.

Ale Pie ($19.90)
Sauce and meat chunks oozed out when my mate cut into the ale pie - it looked great! I had a bite and it was pretty tasty (heaps better than the microwave pies that formed a staple part of my diet during exams). However, my mate has a large appetite and this serving didn’t fill him up.

I grabbed a photo from the Sail and Anchor’s website because I forgot to take photos of the inside of the pub. There are lots of weird and whacky posters on the wall. The dark wooden decor can make the inside look a bit dingy, but there are outdoor areas or tables near windows if you want to people-watch.
My mate ordered a pear cider for me and there’s a large range of other alcoholic beverages, so everyone will be happy. They also seem quite serious about beer!
