Mr Munchies Sushi is the super-cute name of a sushi spot in Mount Lawley. Aside from the unique items listed on the menu, you can also customise your own sushi rolls or sushi salads! We headed there for a cheap and casual lunch, spending ages looking over the menu to decide what to order.

Create your own sushi roll

To make your own sushi roll, you choose a base ingredient like katsu chicken, smoked salmon, or crabstick. Then you select additional fillings, toppings, and sauces. Depending on your choices, a large serving (8 pieces) will cost you upwards of $10.50.

We ordered unagi (smoked eel) as the base ingredient, so our sushi roll cost $10.50. Our fillings were lettuce, inari (tofu skin), and tamagoyaki (sweet egg). We asked for furikake (a mix of sesame seeds, dried fish, seaweed, sugar, salt) and shichimi (7 spice pepper), Japanese BBQ sauce, and mayonnaise on top. It tasted delicious!!

Mango Chicken Roll (small for $9.50)

The Mango Chicken Roll is a seasonal offering, with a small serving (4 pieces) for $9.50. The sweet mango pieces worked really well with coriander, chicken, and prawn fritters.

Japanese Squid Salad ($5.50)

My friend and I shared a squid salad on the side. I was surprised to find that this was an improvement on the standard mass-produced squid salad from food courts. The pieces of squid seemed larger and juicier, plus there seemed to be extra green bits and ginger. Yummo!

Seafood Roll (small for $10.50)

My friend enjoyed her seafood roll which included fresh salmon, steamed prawns, and fresh tuna. Keep in mind the servings are pretty generous. Even though I missed breakfast, I could barely finish 6 pieces of sushi. Most of my friends seemed satisfied after 4 pieces.

Mr Munchies Sushi is good fun, provided you’re not too precious about things.
Unfortunately, there’s no graceful way to chomp the sushi because each piece is enormous. We resorted to biting them in half and dealing with the mess on our plates and faces.

The waiter went above and beyond to look after our table. Service was attentive and friendly, plus we were given useful tips when customising our sushi concoction!
