I rocked up with my Dad for a late breakfast on Thursday morning before he headed into work. Piccolo’s Corner does not have a phone number, website, or menu available online. You’ve got to love small businesses that thrive on word-of-mouth! It was a gorgeous day and the outside tables were crowded, so we settled on a cute rickety table indoors.
There’s no table service so you can grab a menu, order at the counter, collect cutlery, and help yourself to bottles of tap water. We waited about 5 mins for our drinks and another 10-15 mins for food, which is reasonable for a little suburban café that cooks fresh food on order.
Long mac (~$4)
My dad loves his coffee and rated this one 9 out of 10! He seemed impressed.
Apple and ginger juice ($6.50)
I loved my juice and it kicked ass compared to the one I had at Feast Cafe last week. The green apples were chilled, the juice was strained so the colour was a lovely green colour, and the ginger taste was subtle as I requested.
Spicy beans, chorizo, basil pesto, and poached egg ($18.50)
My breakfast was home-made beans on toasted ciabatta bread. Hidden amongst the beans were generous slices of chorizo, which added some delightful chilli heat to the dish. Zesty basil pesto cut through the rich tomato sauce, and the creamy poached egg balanced all the strong flavours on the plate. A testament to this café is that I actually ate half of my poached egg, which is a food that I have disliked my whole life. I wussed out after a couple of bites so I passed the other half to my dad.
Avocado, chorizo, parmesan, and poached egg ($18.50)
My dad’s breakfast was smashed avocado with lime, chorizo, parmesan cheese, balsamic glaze, and toasted ciabatta bread. He is a man of few words and rarely expresses excitement, but he said emphatically of his meal “this is really tasty”. I enjoyed stealing a bite and loved the combination of tangy avocado and spicy chorizo. Defs a winner!
Staff at Piccolo’s Corner are friendly and efficient. The food is delicious and a little different from standard café breakfasts that you find everywhere else. Serving sizes are reasonable but you can always order a cake if you’re peckish afterwards! Probably one of my fav breakfast spots alongside Pearfect Pantry (sic).
