Late lunch on Sunday found me and my handsome date at Toast on a rainy afternoon in East Perth. My sweet tooth was calling but I knew better than to order a sugary crêpe as my first meal for the day!
The freshly squeezed juices were $7.90 each which is bloody daylight robbery, so we settled for the room-temperature water that the waiter served us. Expect to pay at least $15 for your meal without a drink, which upsets me a little, but seems the standard price for similar breakfast items around Perth. Stupid Perth…
Fruit toast ($15)
The fruit toast with spiced ricotta was totally outside my usual comfort zone. I was pleased that the fresh crunchy pear and honey satisfied my sweet tooth, while the heavy fig and walnut bread filled me up! Nothing could make the ricotta look appetising but it was creamy and tasty. Toast makes its own bread and does it well, but I’m not sure toast can ever be worth $15.
Eggs benedict ($16.90)
Slight food envy looking at my dining companion’s plate. The potato and parmesan toast resembled ciabatta bread and was crunchy, chewy, and bready. That’s a good start! The couple of mouthfuls that I tried were delicious, despite my serious aversion to poached eggs. The combination of toast, ham, egg, and hollandaise sauce was rich and flavoursome. Both the poached eggs were perfectly cooked with golden runny centres, plus the hollandaise sauce was rich and creamy. One downside was the leg ham which was salty and meaty, but the texture resembled ham steaks rather than ham off the bone.
We ordered at the counter and waited about 10 minutes for our food, which was a relief because I’ve heard the weekend crowds can be slightly hectic. Toast is a lovely spot to enjoy breakfast and it’s in a nice area so you can walk your food off afterwards, despite the drizzly weather. Even our burps tasted good for hours (lol). There’s certainly good food, but it’s probably too expensive to make this a regular thing.
Likes: tasty, wholesome food
Dislikes: fresh juice is super expensive
Value for money: everything is a little overpriced
Overall: decent food, but probs not my favourite breakfast joint
