East Cafe serves up Western breakfasts, Vietnamese lunches, and cheap quality coffees. Watch out, there’s a new kid on the block!
You can choose to sit down and enjoy your meal, grab packaged fresh food on-the-go, or drop in for a quick coffee. We picked up some menus, shotgunned a table, and joined the queue right before the lunch crowd arrived.
Roast pork banh mi ($6.50)
Banh mi are basically Vietnamese sandwiches and they’re awesome. East Cafe makes them fresh-to-order and spicy fresh red chillies are included as standard, yay!! Loved the crispy skin and tender meat of the roast pork.
Vietnamese pork banh mi
The Vietnamese pork banh mi was equally delicious. These baguettes are moist even though they consist only of bread, meat, and salad bits. The creamy and mysterious white dressing (heh) was a perfect combo with the slightly pickly cucumber and salty meat.
Bun cha gio thit nuong ($12)
Gluttony took the driver’s seat when I shared a banh mi with my friend and then also polished off a huge bowl of noodles. I was so excited by the large bowl of dressing that I immediately sloshed it all into the bowl. Sweet, sour, and salty! The rice noodles were thicker than the usual thin vermicelli but I liked the texture. The fried spring rolls were freshly fried and the warm pork chunks were meaty and favoursome. Next time, I’ll request red chilli to be thrown liberally into the mix, yummm.
Cafe sua da ($4.90)
While I don’t really enjoy coffee, my friends are willing guinea pigs. My friend said that the iced Vietnamese coffee was sweet as expected, but somehow also more bitter than a regular iced coffee. This is something unusual that you’ll just have to try for yourself!
I’m already planning my return to East Cafe for work lunches. There’s pho (noodle soup), pork with broken rice, and fresh spring rolls that look seriously delicious. Also, I might score points with my new colleagues if I show them a café in the CBD that actually sells quality coffee for only $3!
