Saturday morning brunch is great when there’s awesome food without the prep, cooking, or cleaning time. An online coupon for Food Store Deli Café gave us a hearty discount, but I’ve included the regular prices in this review.
West Perth might not be the first place you think of to venture for weekend breakfast. The neighbourhood is less crowded but remember to factor in the cost of parking. Carpools are the way to go!
Flat white (regular for $3.90)
My friend enjoyed his coffee, which arrived promptly a few minutes after we ordered and paid at the counter.
Chai latte ($4.20)
The chai latte was not very strong, but my friend told me it was quite tasty. I opted not to buy a drink because it’s difficult for me to justify the cost of freshly squeezed juice. In hindsight, I probably should have requested tap water because I did feel a little parched after my meal.
Buttermilk pancakes ($13.50)
The pancakes were quite dense and not very moist. However, the berry compote with fresh cream and maple syrup made this a sweet treat. I reckon this is a decent stack of pancakes given the price! Also, these pancakes can be ordered gluten-free.
The Benny’s with salmon ($19.50)
The serving size for my eggs Benedict was also very generous and I found myself struggling to eat the second half. Loved the smooth slices of smoked salmon and smothering of hollandaise sauce. I’m proud of ordering my first-ever poached eggs breakfast and enjoyed squishing both the eggs over the ciabatta toast. The eggs were cooked a teensy bit too long, but were still liquidy enough to amuse me.
Canadian breakfast ($15)
French toast with bacon and maple syrup is such a winning combo. I love adding freezing cold vanilla ice-cream on top when I’m in a particularly piggie mood. This was supposed to come with fresh cream but it wasn’t missed among all the rich eggy bread, crispy salty bacon, and thick maple syrup. My friend thought the bread was a little soggy, but I personally prefer my French toast not-too-crunchy.
Service was friendly and attentive, plus we were given a free coffee voucher to encourage our return. A lovely gesture! Order your food at the counter and be prepared to receive change for a $20 if you don’t buy a drink. Food Store Deli Café seems to be one of the few places in Perth that offers really decent breakfast, large servings, and good service without expecting you to empty your wallet.
Likes: generous servings, friendly service, not too crowded on weekends
Dislikes: cost of street parking in West Perth
Value for money: reasonable due to large serving sizes and quality food
Overall: better value than many other breakfast spots in Perth
