Salt on the Beach in North Freo has both a beach bar and restaurant. I visited the restaurant with my mum to spend a free online voucher on some brunch.
The regular menu prices are quite steep, but we were determined not to spend much more than the value of our voucher. A full lunch is likely to cost $30-$40 depending on your appetite.
Chilled oysters (12 for $36)
My mum enjoyed a plate of plump natural oysters served on ice. A squeeze of lemon and a small sprinkling of sea salt is one of the best ways to enjoy raw oysters. I find these sea creatures a little too strongly fishy for my taste, but my mum loved them and quickly gobbled them up. Fortunately, the oysters were properly shucked and there were no grainy sandy bits like we found at The Witch’s Cauldron.
Grilled haloumi salad ($18)
Please don’t judge me for ordering a salad because haloumi is the most awesome, salty, rubbery cheese. This combo of fennel, rocket, pine nuts, grilled haloumi and pears was deceptively filling. I enjoyed the light and tangy honey mustard dressing. The grilled pears were sweet and had some bite to them.
Service was attentive but a tiny bit snooty. All the tables were served free chilled tap water, which we appreciated. The tablecloth was a little grubby even with a rectangular paper cover on top, but we enjoyed the gorgeous sunny day in the comfort of the cool al fresco area. The food was good because it was heavily discounted, but honestly I probably wouldn’t return without another voucher.
Likes: plump oysters, lovely view of the ocean
Dislikes: slightly snooty waiter
Value for money: prices are quite steep
Overall: nice view, decent food, but high prices are not justified
