Nubia Café in Yokine is really offering something unique, as one of the only African restaurants in Perth. We arrived while it was still quiet, but soon the little restaurant was buzzing with live African music and people who all seemed to know each other!
It is a little difficult to figure out the menu but the solo waiter was really helpful with suggestions. We amused ourselves watching a foreign film on the TV before the band arrived! There was a little wait but it was worth it for freshly prepared food.
The falafel was a moist flavoursome chickpea mixture which tasted great sprinkled with sesame seeds. I guess the random little salads were designed to make our meal look more healthy, but I didn’t really have time for vegies when there were deep-fried goodies on the plate!
African bread; Nubia mish sauce ($3); Nubia hot chilli sauce ($3)
We loved the Nubia mish sauce which was a cooling mix of yoghurt, garlic, and black seeds. It went well with everything! The African bread seemed to be Lebanese bread but we weren’t upset because it was soft and good to dip into sauces. Beware the chilli sauce: super spicy!
Grilled lahama ($20); Sujuk ($20)
Grilled lamb was the star of the show. The grilled meats are actually cooked over a flame, so there was a gorgeous smoky flavour to the lamb. We were surprised that the beef sausages were a little spicy! All the meat was tasty and well-seasoned. There was also a heap of steamed rice, which was loose and dry compared to fluffy jasmine rice from Asian restaurants.
Our meal would normally have cost about $30pp without a coupon, which seems reasonable. We sipped on Coke and probably should have asked for chilled water (most other tables had bottles). Service was a little slower-paced but I enjoyed the feel of this restaurant, simple and relaxed. Nubia is a special place with unique food, so I expect that it will continue to do well. You should give African food a go because it’s tasty and most people would find something they enjoy (except maybe vegos).
Likes: flame-grilled lamb, unique food menu
Value for money: prices are reasonable
Overall: interesting and tasty experience of African cuisine
