Noodle Forum is a relatively new spot that’s somewhat hidden away in Equus Arcade between Hay St and Murray St. The crowds swarm about during weekday lunchtime! Get there a little early or wait 10 mins for a seat because the turnaround is pretty quick.
This place thrives on good food and service, including a clear focus on using local free-range produce. Despite this, all the noodle bowls are only $11.90.
The owner is a jovial man who wants to keep the art of noodle-making alive. He proudly talks about his lifetime of experience making hand-pulled noodles.
Crispy dumplings ($6 for 5 pieces)
There’s a side of fried wontons on our table, which my friend clearly bought to share! I love the oily crunchy wonton skin and the bursty flavoursome prawn filling. Defs a guilty treat, but who can resist chilli mayo…
Beef brisket noodle ($11.90)
We slurp away at the noodles, enjoying the bite and texture that you never get from the packaged variety. The sauce is rich and salty, very similar to the brown soy-based Malaysian wonton mee sauce but with a stronger star anise flavour. At this point I learn that the restaurant uses no MSG, which seriously surprises me. The beef brisket is tender and meaty, so I’m totally stuffed after my meal.
Laksa supreme ($11.90)
My mate orders the seafood laksa and promptly splashes it into her eye *noooo*. She recovers and happily polishes off her bowl, pleased with the tasty soup.
Signature wonton noodle, dry style ($11.90)
The wonton noodles are best ordered dry-style in my opinion. You’ll get the brown saucy noodles plus a bowl of roughly 8 wontons in a refreshing chicken stock (remember there’s no MSG so you can totally drink it).
We wanted to order the roast pork noodles but they’d run out just before we arrived (devo!). I tasted the pork a few days later and it was awesome, not the usual bright pink char siew that’s served in many restaurants. Service is prompt and friendly, with orders taken at the counter. Take a couple of minutes to chat with the owner or watch him perform as he makes noodles! Noodle Forum is an awesome spot for lunch in the city.
