Who could have expected that I would blog about the Raw Kitchen?! Yes, I knew the food was vego but it’s one of my friend’s fav spots. I honestly can’t say that I understood the concept and expected “raw” to mean unprocessed, not uncooked…
For the ignorant types like me who blanked on the meaning of the restaurant name, this place serves raw food. Nothing is cooked or heated above a certain temperature. It’s probs time to re-read the menu and decide whether you really want to try that vego Malaysian “curry”.
Raw pesto pasta ($23)
I ordered a pasta because my brain melted after realising nothing was cooked. The pasta was literally zucchini, like shredded zucchini. Totally bewildering. Despite my extreme scepticism, the zucchini had a similar texture to pasta and I found it tasted just fine (a relief coz I actually avoid zucchini most days). The mix of sundried tomatoes, basil, capers, hunks of avocado, and mystery spices was delicious. To my utter delight and surprise, this dish was incredibly filling and full of flavour.
Raw nachos ($19)
The safest choice on the menu is probably nachos. Corn chips are dried rather than fried, sour cream is replaced with some sort of dairy-free cashew cream, and refried beans become ground walnuts that I swear tasted legit. It somehow reminds me of Cinderella and her pumpkin after midnight. No fatty fried heavy stuff here, all natural. Luckily, the nachos actually tasted great and were topped with fresh guacamole and tomato salsa.
Service was attentive but we caught the kitchen right in the swap between breakfast and lunch, so our 45 minute wait time was almost unbearably long. I wondered if they were growing the vegies from scratch seeing as how they weren’t cooking them. The waitress brought free tap water and our food cost about $20 each.
My experience at the Raw Kitchen was very positive and the flavours were incredible, especially considering that bacon and fried things are my usual food of choice. A small caution based on hearsay is that not everyone’s stomach can easily handle a large plate of raw food. Here’s my life wisdom: go easy if you’re feeling queasy.
Likes: zucchini pasta, getting out of my comfort zone
Dislikes: food took forever to arrive
Value for money: reasonable considering servings and vegan-ness
Overall: would recommend everyone trying once (even meat-eaters)
